New Delhi: Political parties are divided on the issue of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together. While four political parties are in support of this idea, nine are against it. However, the ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress did not participate in the consultation process organized by the Law Commission on this subject.

Apart from Shiromani Akali Dal, AIADMK, SP and TRS supported the idea at the end of the two-day consultation process on the issue of holding elections together. Although the BJP's allies Goa Forward Party opposed the idea, Trinamool Congress, AAP, DMK, TDP, CPI, CPI (M), Forward Block and JDS also opposed this idea. The SP, TRS, AAP, DMK, TDP, JDS and All India Forward Block met the Law Commission and kept their views.

The SP was represented by Ram Gopal Yadav. SP supported this idea. Although Yadav clarified that the first ever election should be held in 2019 when the 16th Lok Sabha term ends. If the simultaneous election happened in 2019, then the Yogi Adityanath BJP government's tenure will be short. Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashish Khaitan told the Law Commission that the simultaneous election is a 'move' to keep people away from forming a government because if the two elections are held, the tenure of the houses will be extended.

Telangana Chief Minister and TRS chief Chandrashekhar Rao said in a written reply to the Law Commission that his party supports the assembly elections together in the country. B. Venod Kumar, who represented TRS in the meeting, said that the analysis is wrong that if the elections are held simultaneously, national issues will be huge on local issues. CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury wrote a letter to the Commission and submitted his objection to the proposal on the proposal.
